APOLLO TO ARTEMIS

By Mike Jackson

Mike Jackson’s series ‘APOLLO TO ARTEMIS’ dedicates eight unique prints to a selection of female engineers that worked behind the scenes on the Apollo missions, through to the modern day missions too and who have all played an essential part in the success of space projects old and new.

The images are abstract representations of feelings about space missions and have a 3D-like quality to them. They are unique silver gelatin prints made in a traditional darkroom by drawing with light on light sensitive paper. Not a photograph in itself, but its own new medium ‘photographic art.’  In each one Jackson captures the sense of journey, calculation and adventure.

About the Artist

Mike Jackson is a darkroom artist and a leading exponent of cameraless photography, with work held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and numerous private collections. He works with traditional photographic paper in a darkened studio and makes his work using controlled rays of light that react with the silver gelatin paper once developed in chemicals. This way of working and his ethic regarding the constant need to discover and experiment has given him a unique aesthetic producing immediately recognizable results.
